New ATECO Codes 2025: what’s changing and where to find them

New ATECO Classification from April 1, 2025: what’s changing and what businesses need to do

ATECO 2025

The new ATECO classification came into effect on January 1 and has been officially adopted as of April 1, 2025. The updated list of ATECO codes replaces the ATECO 2007 classification, which was last updated in 2022, and introduces several important changes.

As stated by ISTAT, the new classification of economic activities aims to more accurately reflect the Italian production landscape, in light of the innovation and transformation processes shaping the economic system.

ATECO Code Update 2025: Key Changes

The new classification of economic activities presents several differences compared to ATECO 2007. The 2025 version removes 970 codes (such as those for renting discs and VHS tapes) and introduces 1,070 entirely new ones, including codes for influencer marketing, satellite communications, and the production of solid fuels from plant biomass - activities that have gained relevance in recent years.

There is also a clearer distinction between accommodation services offered in bed and breakfasts and those in vacation homes, rooms, and apartments.

The old Section J “Information and Communication Services” has been split, leading to the creation of a new Section K focused on telecommunications, software development and consultancy, IT infrastructure, and other information service activities.

One major change is that the sales channel is no longer a criterion for assigning an ATECO code. In compliance with NACE standards, the new classification no longer differentiates between physical store sales, online sales, or sales via vending machines. Instead, it classifies solely based on the type of goods sold.

Other notable changes include the division of electricity production into two categories (from non-renewable and renewable sources), and the relocation of the activity “Real Estate Project Development” from the “Construction” section to the new Section M “Real Estate Activities”.
To explore all the changes, you can consult the new 2025 ATECO code classification—available on the ISTAT website.

ATECO Code changes 2025: where to find them and how to update

ATECO codes will be automatically updated starting April 1, 2025. From that date, all statistical, administrative, and fiscal processes must use the new codes.

Businesses affected by the automatic reclassification will receive a notification of the change from their local Chamber of Commerce. Those who do not receive any notice are not required to change their ATECO code, but they can request an update if the new classification better reflects their business activity.

Until November 30, 2025, ATECO code corrections can be requested free of charge via the dedicated online service provided by the Business Register.
You can also view your current ATECO code at any time by accessing your Tax Drawer (“Cassetto fiscale”) in the reserved area of the Revenue Agency’s portal.

To support a smooth transition, a transitional period is in place during which both the new and previous codes will appear on the company's business registration document.

ATECO Codes 2025 via API: how to access them?

In just a few weeks, the 2025 ATECO codes will also be available via Openapi. The Marketing and Full services of the Company API will allow access to both the old ATECO 2007 codes and the new 2025 ones, making it quick and easy to verify whether a specific company has been affected by the reclassification under the new regulation.
